Bentley was given the opportunity to showcase cutting edge technology through its involvement in the development of the Florida Raceplex, a planned motorsports facility situated on more than 650 acres in Lake County. The client’s interest in Bentley evolved quickly through Bill’s direct involvement in road racing and his own racing team, created in the early 1990s.
Bentley developed a marketing video for the Raceplex that featured animation of the preliminary design. Though Bentley had the industry’s leading tools for computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), they were incredibly slow at performing even small amounts of animation. Adding to the challenge was the fact that 3-D software was still in its infancy and extremely limited in scope. Rendering two minutes of animation would prove to be an enormous task at this time.
With the help of a talented in-house CADD designer, Bentley produced a “fly-by” of the track facility and a 3-D simulated driver’s view of the road course and ovals at full race speed, including sound. The simulation was synced with the gear shifting and breaking points of renowned road course driver Wayne Taylor and his Chevrolet GTP Spice.
The project was an astounding success, catching the eye of local news media that featured Bentley’s video in their newscasts about the project.
